Do churches in the US have to be registered with any sort of overseeing thingy?

I need this information for undisclosed porpoises.

I don't believe that there's any sort of authoritative power required to form a church. However, I'm pretty sure there's some sort of process you must go through to determine if your church is officially recognized by the government, and thus eligible for tax deductability.

I'm not sure about different individual religious. Obviously you have to go through the Vatican or whatever to have an officially recognized Catholic church, but I think if all you want to do is start a generic Christian church it's A-OK.
