Weird.

I go to the semiactive forum of my message board, and it doesn't load. Well, it loads, but all there is is a title, and the actual page stays default gray. I view source and all the html is there, it just doesn't show up on the page.

ezboard, you suck.

Ezboard.. *shudders*

Of all the various types of boards I've adminned, that's one of the worst.. the other one was so bad that I can't even remember what it was called; it must have faded into complete obscurity a long time ago. Right now, I'm loving (well, more like not exactly hating, but you know ^_~) my phpbb.. ^^

What's this? Is it free? Should I switch?

[identity profile] id-42.livejournal.com 2002-01-30 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's free, but.. it's got some definite problems. You also need space somewhere to run it- space that'll let you use php, with a mysql database or some such nonsense. Hard to come by, for free.

Goodie. Something I actually know something (not much) about...
phpBB is what they're thinking of switching the Keensp* fora to. Unlike ezBoard it's local to your machine (so you need to have the disk space to store the user info and threads locally.) Unlike UBB - where do I start? (I can't stand UBB for reasons stemming from the problems it had on the Keensp* boards...) One board already running phpBB - if you want to see what it looks like - is the board to discuss Absurd Notions (http://www.absurdnotions.org), and is here (http://atp.cx/absurdnotions/) (running phpBB 1.4.0.) It works by combining that wonderful, Perl/C-like programming language called PHP that I know practically nothing about (but hope to learn), with a SQL-based database (I think), to provide rapid access to threads and userdata.

I like UBB, actually. Eminently hackable, whereas I get lost in PHP code. Also, although it's very touchy about being messed about with, it doesn't have a lot of the problems that phpbb has.. like for example the fact that you can't use quotation marks within tags in just about any field. It also doesn't have some features that phpbb has.

Personally, my favorite board of the moment is vB.. but since I don't have the money for it, and don't feel a strong urge to pirate it, I'll make do with phpbb.

Thanks- this is the first I've heard about significant differences between phpBB and UBB other than in the direction of stability/lost threads in the latter (the lack of an effective file-lock routine, for one thing...)

[identity profile] malver.livejournal.com 2002-01-30 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Horsey facepalms and remembers the question. Yes. Phpbb is free, opensource, located here (http://www.phpbb.com) I think? I might be mistaken about any of those, but I'm pretty sure. Unlike UBB which has a free limited-feature version and a prettydarnexpensive fullfeature.

Sounds too difficult for my tiny brain to get around... think I'll stay with ezboard.

eepers! your ez board has popups! *hides*

[identity profile] napoleonherself.livejournal.com 2002-01-30 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, muchly of the popups. ezboard sucks.
