Well.. with TNG and DS9 and Voyager and all that stuff.. we get the benefit of 'hearing' all the audio through a universal translator. This translator, ofcourse, filters out all the not-so-nice words. All we get to hear in the future is DAMN and maybe BITCH. (Since damn is in the bible and bitch could refer to a female dog.) Back in the beginnings of Star Fleet they didn't have these magical mystical universal translators (you know.. I just realized how "Universal" universal is when you're talking about Star Trek). And so Captain Sam can use the word "ass".
I know you're saying "But ass can refer to a donkey or mule" and shouldn't be nix'd out by the translator. Yes, but no one refers to beasts of burden as asses in the future. No one really uses them anyway.
