Today was an odd sort of day. We talked at length about the bombings in two of my classes, and the third was ended early -- and that instructor NEVER finishes early.
I think what scares me most about this whole thing is the way so many people seem to be grasping at the easy answer. Said answer being the bomb -- or The Bomb, if you like. Bomb Afghanistan (or whoever the Likely Suspect of the Moment is; I've heard several suggestions today), take out the baddies, problem solved. Except it isn't that easy. We got the crap bombed out of us, and all it did was get us ticked off. Retaliating is a really, really good way to encourage further retaliations. "Oh, you think that's bad? Take this."
I keep having the most blackly hilarious thought... American bands always seem so big on holding "relief concerts" for the Global Concern of the Month -- Kosovar refugees, earthquake victims in India, whatever. So who's gonna hold the relief concert for us?
And I'd also like to leave off with the following thought: if you wanna judge all Muslims by the freaks who hijack planes and who go into Jewish discos with bombs strapped to their chests, then I suggest you judge all Christians by the fundies who're doing their best to keep women in the kitchen and minorities as far away from "respectable folks" as possible. No, I'm not Muslim; no, I'm not Christian. I just have this silly, stupid little thought that more hate is probably NOT the best way to get through this mess.
