Dell Dimension 2400
Celeron 2.2GHz
256MB DDR SDRAM
Integrated Intel 3D AGP graphics
40GB 7200 RPM hard drive
floppy drive that cost 20 bucks extra because apparently nobody really needs floppy drives anymore
XP Home
Integrated 10/100 ethernet, no modem
48X/24X/48X CD-RW drive
Integrated ADI 1885 audio
some various softwares that family will probably never use but that you can't not get

All for $419 and tax, which is not bad at all. Mine was more and slower and I didn't even get it a year ago. Accursed Moore's Law.

Technically family computer isn't broken, it's just that the drive won't boot anymore. A new drive, or a reformat of the old one, would fix things right up. But either solution results in their having a perfectly good hard drive surrounded by a crappy, crappy eMachine. Better by far to jump ship and get a new computer that doesn't have severe lockups an average of three times a day, and that doesn't reboot itself completely randomly due to a defective power supply.

I shall have to name their computer. I wonder how I'll do it given that I'll be thousands of miles away and unable to get a feel for its personality.

[Edit: new computer's name is Maurice. The elephant pixies in my head have spoken.]
