From today's Ruminations: "I have a horrible hacking cough; every time I clear my throat, I break into another computer system." (Chris Lipe)

Dear Doctor Science,
My cat comes running when I open a can of tuna, but not when I open a can of green beans. How does she know what can I am opening?

-- Eric Hooper from South Lyon, MI

The can opener lets the cat know the contents of the can by letting out an ultrasonic scream. This sound was standardized by the International Can Opener Society at their world convention in Dayton Ohio. The year was 1964, the first year electric can openers appeared on the market. Celebrity cats served on an advisory committee, and were given a lifetime supply of the finest canned albacore tuna from the grateful can opener industry which, before that time, had been plagued with low morale and incompatible standards.

Astounding!

So that's how it works.

I suppose pop-top lids just don't sound the same. My cat comes running whether I open a can of her food or a can of soup.
