I just got back from the first session of the Junior Honors Colloquim. This is universityspeak for 'place where all the smarty-smart students get together to hear smarty-smart professors lecture about stuff'. Today we heard a statistics professor talk about Generalization Theory and Statistical Equation Models (I think. I'm going from memory here.) It was... deep. PhD level stuff, and here he was trying to explain it to mere juniors -- honors students, sure, but just juniors, and not even juniors whose majors had anything to DO with statistics, in most cases. It was fun, though, oddly enough. It was an academic presentation, but the mood was still nice and relaxed, and it was hard to understand but every once in a while I'd suddenly get a glimpse of what he was talking about and there would be this sort of 'ahhhh!' moment, like a mini epiphany. I'm thinking that's what the university wants us to get out of the class, only less mini and more epiphany. But then, I've long been aware that I'm not nearly as smart as most of the others in the program.

So, yeah. It sucked that I had to go to school at 4 in the afternoon (and catch a ride home at 6 in the evening, with my mom's boyfriend, whom it's not that I don't like but I just don't KNOW him and I'm SCARED of people I don't know), but at least it was a relatively interesting sort of class thing. Plus at least there's only four more of them for the rest of the semester.
I understand perfectly if you don't want to click here. )
