(And for the zombie walk part, you can read mecha's main post about it here. Includes our super-sweet banner!)
Hah! Poking around in the files that get installed with The Sims, I discovered the secret behind the pattern I had noticed previously. (A bunch of labels for things and other such string resources are defined in .iff files and then applied to other .iff files, so if you've got IFF Pencil 2 then you can open the resource files up and look at/manipulate them, and... yeah.)
String resources in Live.iff:

And therein I find (look if I could expand the window to show the whole list at once instead of 11 at a time I would, I did not write this GUI okay):

Yeah, if they weren't using author names to build the list of possible Vacation family names -- with an emphasis on science fiction and fantasy authors -- then I'll eat my nonexistent hat. Wait, I've got a FRANK hat from the Comics Curmudgeon. I'll eat that. (And, Victor, I guess this maybe answers your question to my original post.)
Oh man, like all of the GUI strings for The Sims are right here in IFF-Pencil-2-editable plain text. I could totally change everything all up in here. Make it so that instead of Hunger and Comfort and Hygiene, a Sim needs to satisfy the motives of, like, Wombat and Zippers and Spackle. And instead of Charisma, a Sim could gain skill points in Flugelhorn.
And even without editing anything, I can get a concentrated dose of crazy by viewing the list of first names to assign to male NPCs created by the Makin' Magic expansion:

Here, let me introduce you to my friends. Here's Dreadsley, that's Deadward over there, the guy in the shades is Suarakatakat, and, oh yeah, Bruce.
I have made excellent use of my five-day weekend.
