I can't spell it either. It's actually Sméagol, but I don't like having to mess with charmap any more than I absolutely have to. And yes that is a misspelling without the accent because Tolkien was a linguistics professor and that's why everything's got those funky diacritical notations in Middle Earth. Sméagol, Déagol, Khazad-dûm, Lothlórien...geez, enough already! It's worse in the Silmarillion because of all the Elvish names. Not that there's anything wrong with Elvish names outside of all the accents and graves and what have you. I plan on naming my next rat Nimrodel. But sometimes the good professor let his area of expertise run away with him.
