I have admin status on my computer. This should not be disabled. I should have full access to everything. BUT, since UITS are a bunch of FUCKSTICKS, in order to get on teh intarweb I had to have my settings CHANGED OUT FROM UNDER ME and then LOCKED AGAINST ME. All, naturally, without my permission, and without my knowledge until such time as I STUMBLE ACROSS various facets of the changedness.

Does anyone know a way to get around this? Please? I have this thing where I want my computer to be secure and in my control, and now it's neither. And mecha's even less happy about the situation than I am...

Which settings? I can't seem to ping freewaymonkey, so your picture's not showing up.

Yeah, the network keeps dropping us randomly for no reason, and server can hardly work when it's not actually connected to anything.

Try

That's pretty damned squirrely.

Could you snag a $50 P-133, and run it as a NAT box? Although they probably kill off ICS while they're in there, so you'd have to try to get third-party NAT software running, too...

Ugh. Sorry they're such jackasses.

Oops - meant to type P-133+ - definitely don't pay $50 for a P-133. That's just the minimum it takes to run Win2k.<>/dork>

I actually have no idea what you're talking about, but if the possible solution mecha found doesn't actually work, then I shall do some researchin' on it.

Could you run ZoneAlarm and have it disallow the Windows Update program (or whatever it's really called) from accessing the internet?

That's not the real issue, it doesn't sound like, but it would prevent at least that one issue.

I might be able to, but the problem is that to turn on the program control function is to make it so Galaxies won't connect anymore... and we all know how unallowable this is...

Why would it make Galaxies not connect? It should ask when you try to connect, "is it okay for Galaxies to be online?".. or so I'd expect.

No idea. I went through and manually added every Galaxies-related program (as there's several that all have to connect for it to work) to the OK list, and still nada. It is irritating.

Do you keep the client running while you're attempting to connect? (Just wondering, because I have ZoneAlarm "disabled", which apparently means that it just sits there and blocks everything it hasn't been told not to block, without even asking.)

Also, have you set both of the permissions? Client and server, I think?

I'm not sure mine will disable... I'm using an older version. It has settings the newer versions don't, though, and that I am rather attached to, so I don't want to upgrade.

And yep, both are set, for every program in the folder and its subfolders... something still doesn't quite go through. It's a pity, really.

In order to fix your automatic updates thing (I think this will work, it's what I'm trying) go to Administrative Tools, Services, and disable the Automatic Update service. That should fix their little red wagon.

In order to allow yourself to log in without, you know, logging in, go to Start, Run, control userpasswords2, uncheck the box that says you have to log in as a particular user, then it will prompt you to give a username/password combo, and Bob's your uncle, you're done.

In order to seek revenge on UITS for haxx0ring our machines, meet me in the Union building tomorrow afternoon with a shovel and a couple bags of quicklime. Promptly at 12:30, please.
