Those two links together are almost enough to make me feel patriotic. Almost. It's not that I don't care; I just haven't been able to get into the whole "[insert deity, deities or similar ness here] bless America" thing. I don't know why. I look at all the houses and businesses that have American flags outside of them, and I see all the cars with flags on their antennas and whatnot, and I just sort of blink and think "WHY?" I hear that schoolchildren are making little American flags in class as an assignment, and I shudder at the idea of such subtle brainwashing.
But those two links have got the ol' patriotism at least poking up its head to say hi, anyway. And this is good. Sometimes it is very, very dangerous to not think and say the right things about the "free" nation in which you live, whether or not a piece of paper claims otherwise. I do hope you'll forgive me if I suggest that we may be approaching one of those times.

In Which Ryl Overuses Parentheses
Date: 2001-09-18 02:08 pm (UTC)Th'art forgiven my child. I'm thinking the same thing. It's one thing to have a flag outside your house (the guy who lives across the street from my parents has had one for years). It's quite another to blindfold yourself with it.
Yeah, this is a good country. Lots of other countries would be under martial law right now (probably still from Last November). But it ain't perfect. I submit Clearchannel's recent censoring spree (don't have the link, check

Date: 2001-09-18 02:09 pm (UTC)For example, now would be a very bad time to admit that should a draft again be instituted (which seems unlikely at this point, but one can always worry), you might bolt for Canada or any other neutral country, which some of the more opinionated patriotic folk would conclude with "and never come back".

Date: 2001-09-18 02:33 pm (UTC)Of course, if the rules ever change and I find myself with a draft notice in my mailbox, I'm either cutting off my foot or moving to Canada. Or both.

There will be no draft, though, will there? And it couldn't possibly last 2.5 years...right?

Date: 2001-09-18 03:00 pm (UTC)If there is a draft and I get drafted I'm in the mind set right now that I'd go. Sure, getting shot at would probably really suck. But life around here isn't very exciting lately and I have been saying I need a big change in my life. It'll give me a chance to travle to far away lands and it'll get me in good shape which is something I'd like to be at least once in my life. And if I make it back I'd be a veteran and have one of them plates that says veteran on it!
