http://www.sbcmd.com/world/ (lots of images which only seem to load half the time, but there are mirrors, and if you're lucky you can manage to get just about all the photos to load between the three different sites)

http://www.freecardsbyali.com/america/america.html (massive movie which takes forever on dialup)

Those two links together are almost enough to make me feel patriotic. Almost. It's not that I don't care; I just haven't been able to get into the whole "[insert deity, deities or similar ness here] bless America" thing. I don't know why. I look at all the houses and businesses that have American flags outside of them, and I see all the cars with flags on their antennas and whatnot, and I just sort of blink and think "WHY?" I hear that schoolchildren are making little American flags in class as an assignment, and I shudder at the idea of such subtle brainwashing.

But those two links have got the ol' patriotism at least poking up its head to say hi, anyway. And this is good. Sometimes it is very, very dangerous to not think and say the right things about the "free" nation in which you live, whether or not a piece of paper claims otherwise. I do hope you'll forgive me if I suggest that we may be approaching one of those times.

Th'art forgiven my child. I'm thinking the same thing. It's one thing to have a flag outside your house (the guy who lives across the street from my parents has had one for years). It's quite another to blindfold yourself with it.

Yeah, this is a good country. Lots of other countries would be under martial law right now (probably still from Last November). But it ain't perfect. I submit Clearchannel's recent censoring spree (don't have the link, check [livejournal.com profile] littledevi). I will personally crank up "Learn to Fly" now every time I hear it. And since I live in Redneck Central, there's lotsa other things about this country that I have major problems with (like why the KKK continues to exist). But I have learned to keep my mouth shut and insert the Look of Death where appropriate. Have to. Won't get hired otherwise in this "free country". Say what you want as long as the kid's parents approve.

That list of "objectionable" songs cracks me up. Yep, lots of dangerous, seditious lyrics in Buddy Holly songs. Uh huh.

I definitely agree.

For example, now would be a very bad time to admit that should a draft again be instituted (which seems unlikely at this point, but one can always worry), you might bolt for Canada or any other neutral country, which some of the more opinionated patriotic folk would conclude with "and never come back".

I have always been glad that the draft is one thing I will never have to worry about, seeing as I am not only half-blind and fat (although perhaps not enough of either to kick in 4-F status, I wouldn't know offhand, and a quick Google search reveals nothing), but female.

Of course, if the rules ever change and I find myself with a draft notice in my mailbox, I'm either cutting off my foot or moving to Canada. Or both.

I thought that I was guaranteed a 4-F for the reasons you listed (well, not the last one), but my mom has told me that's what boot camp is for.

There will be no draft, though, will there? And it couldn't possibly last 2.5 years...right?

Boot camp only lasts six weeks (at least that's what my mommy tells me). They can't change a person THAT much in that span of time!

And I dunno. Depends on whom you ask. My Magic 8.5-Ball says... um... *shakes it* 'Fnord.' Stupid cheap knockoff.

Well, I always thought that boot camp was there simply to break one's spirits, make them not question authority, and things of that nature. Then again, I see Al Gore's face in a plate of mashed potatos, so you might not want to depend on me.

Foolish BabelFish. That should be "But yes", or, idiomatically, "Of course".

I can't be drafted. Blood reasons. Specifically I will bleed a whole lot if my skin's defenses are breached. They don't want me.

Oh, and the half-blind thing applies to me too. Hooray 20/105!

Note to self, a set of shiny collector knives does not make a good present for Ryl.

Not that I was gonna mail anyone any knives anyway... even if they were shiny...

Why hello, nice government agents, what are you doing here...?

I like seeing the American flags. First time I saw them I wondered why people would do such things, but I think it's pretty cool. I guess I'd be considered pretty unpatriotic too, but seeing the flags -everywhere- makes that one patriotic bone I have cheer.

If there is a draft and I get drafted I'm in the mind set right now that I'd go. Sure, getting shot at would probably really suck. But life around here isn't very exciting lately and I have been saying I need a big change in my life. It'll give me a chance to travle to far away lands and it'll get me in good shape which is something I'd like to be at least once in my life. And if I make it back I'd be a veteran and have one of them plates that says veteran on it!

Plus you'd then have war stories with which to bore your grandkids someday. Yep.

Exactly! I can tell them about the time on the Aweequib Dunes when there were twenty Arabian tanks coming at me and my whole unit had already ran away, but I held my ground and blew up all twenty tanks using only my pocket knife and a handful of sand.
