Lord Buckley is really, really cool. Have I mentioned that lately? He is. I realize my 'current music' isn't Buckley, but that's 'cause the Gettysburg Address just finished.

You've never heard the story of Jonah and the Whale till you've heard it in hipster beatnik lingo, with a bit about how Jonah finds an interesting plant to smoke.

I put some hair remover gunk on my face about half an hour ago, and now it hurts. Oh, how it hurts. Note to self, when it says to test a tiny bit first, listen. Chemical reactions are not always our friends. At least the swelling's gone most of the way down now, thanks to repeated splashings with water. If there's one thing I never want to forget from chemistry classes, it's that adding water is almost always a Good Thing. Certain scenes from Fight Club not included.

Look up Richard Hackley on mp3.com, if he's still there. Hysterically bad stuff. I mean BAD. I mean, standard Christian rock can get bad enough (and Christian gansta rap, don't even get me STARTED on what's wrong with that), but this... oy. BAD.

Haven't heard Lord Buckley- yet. I did attend, if I remember, a concert in which was played a David Amram piece for saxophone and orchestra dedicated to his memory (the saxophonist supposed to represent him,) though... the other pieces in the program were, I think, by Malcolm Arnold (a mostly-20th-century concert and film composer of some interest) and Tchaikovsky (serenade for strings.) Went to the concert because my sister was playing horn in the pieces that had horn parts (university orchestra kind of thing.) Was fun...

There's a note about the Amram piece for Lord Buckley here (http://www.fmp.com/amram/classical_reviews/ode_to_lord_buckley_3.html) ... apparently my memory isn't quite gone, for there probably therefore really is such a beastie as that work, whether or not I really heard it (and I'm thinking I probably did.)

Oooh, I want to hear that now. If it has anything to do with Buckley it no doubt rocks.

Well, there is a recording (of sorts and of an arrangement)- Arizona University Recordings' Contemporary Composer Series AUR CD 3111, (c) 2000, Jeff Benedict, sax, Twyla Meyer, piano. There was an LP of the orchestral version (Harvey Pittel, saxophone ; Louisville Orchestra ; Akira Endo, conductor) on Louisville Edition records LS 781 back in 1985- don't think that's been reissued on CD, but might have been. The Arizona U. CD might be available from some online source- I could check.

Foo, nothing.

Something with Jack Kerouac's name on it, though, I think I'll download it and see what it is...

Well, he did write a piece called 'Selections from Jack Kerouac's "On the road"' if that's what you're referring to... not sure if there are commercial recordings, I know it's been performed though (at a Library of Congress concert, for instance.) Also a book called 'Offbeat: Collaborating with Kerouac' published quite recently, apparently. (The LoC also has a tape of the world premiere of the Buckley Ode, as played by the Portland Symphony, Bruce Hangen conducting, Kenneth Radnofsky, sax, from the nationally syndicated radio program 'America in Concert', episode 137.)
I believe my parents may have met Amram at one point, but I'm not sure.

Some more information (sorry!):
more google searching says that this is- hrm. was and might be again?- available not as part of an Amram CD, but as part of Kerouac's book-on-CD (in the music section) 'Reads on the Road', whose Barnes&Noble listing (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?ean=14431047428) has sample tracks including somewhat from the aforesaid Orizaba 210 Blues, and is listed as being temporarily sold out. (Apparently the CD is a combination of Kerouac reading from his novel, and "several jazz standards Kerouac recorded in the '50s (he sounds a bit like Chet Baker), two long poems ('Orizaba 210 Blues' and the previously unpublished 'Washington D.C. Blues') with new musical accompaniment composed by Kerouac pal David Amram," to quote partially from the B&N review...
Dunno if that helps actually. Sorry.

That does help, actually. It lets me know for sure who's talking at me!

*listens to it, and snickers at the bongo drums (mmm, cliche beatnikness), but declares it to still be cool enough to keep*

Well, assuming it's the same rendering as on the Kerouac CD, yes! :)
Sounds fun.
