I saw him speak in Indianapolis a few years ago with two friends of mine. As religious figures go, the guy's all right. Not that I find the Buddhist cosmology any more credible than the Christian one, but at least he isn't out there saying I'm a bad person for not believing in his sky-god.
(In point of fact, the speech I saw him give was on the merits of multiculturalism and religious plurality. He specifically addressed and defended atheists, which makes him, to date, sole religious figure I've ever heard do so.)
I figured Buddhism was about accepting things as they are. Those who don't seek enlightenment in this life will have another life afterward in which to find the true path, as many times as it takes. That's just the way it is. So there's no "evil" anyway... just humanity and then enlightenment.
